NordVPN offers unbreakable encryption, fast speeds, and a set of additional options you can benefit from. When it comes to unblocking streaming services, it’s absolutely unparalleled, which makes it the best choice of all of the VPN services on this list if you want to use Hulu from locations other than Japan or the United States. Unlike some VPN providers who claim that they have a no-logs policy but don’t have anything to back that claim up, NordVPN decided to have a team of experts who would audit their no-logs policy on a regular basis.

KEY FEATURES:
  • Next-gen encryption
  • Smart Play
  • DNS leak protection
  • Up to 6 simultaneous connections
  • No logs policy (expert audited)

ExpressVPN is one of the most trusted providers and has been around since 2009. It prides itself on the robust security and privacy it offers its users, together with a beginner-friendly interface. With a wide variety of VPN protocols and a strict no-logging policy, this VPN service ensures that user activities and data are safe from prying eyes, such as ISPs or hackers. The price starts at $9.99 a month, which is somewhat of a drawback as similar products can be found at better prices. Still, this VPN is the way to go if you want a foolproof method for unblocking streaming services such as Hulu or Netflix.

Two of the best perks of Surfshark are the ability to have unlimited simultaneous connections and a very affordable price. In fact, if you choose to use it only for a month, you’ll pay $12.95, but if you decide to subscribe for two years, the price will go down to a measly $2.49 a month. As with the best Hulu VPNs, Surfshark gives you a chance to relax and avoid any threats online, with features such as MultiHop and Stealth VPN boosting VPN speed and privacy. Besides, although not the best, there’s a reason why this VPN found its way on this list - it is very good at unblocking content on various streaming services, including Hulu.

CyberGhost is a pretty good solution if you want to watch Hulu with a VPN, as it offers three designated servers for this streaming service. Other than that, it is very effective for torrenting and unblocking some other streaming platforms. Although the monthly plan is $12.99, you can get a generous deal if you opt for a 3-year plan. This way, you’d be paying only $2.29/month. You’ll have a 45-day money-back guarantee.

Atlas VPN is a small provider that might not offer many VPN servers, but it does the job well when unblocking a Hulu account that can’t access specific regional content. Its MultiHop feature lets you tunnel your connection and protect you using many encryption layers. Similarly, apart from blocking malicious websites, it uses WireGuard protocol to enable you with a secure online experience at all times. Additionally, if you plan to use this VPN with your family members, you can benefit from an unlimited number of connections for Hulu streaming.

KEY FEATURES:
  • Supports torrenting
  • No payment details needed for the free VPN app
  • P2P available on all servers
  • Works with many streaming services
  • IP address rotation
  • Kill Switch

Why and How Does Hulu Block VPNs?

Hulu has produced some pretty great shows over the years, so the popularity of the streaming service kept growing steadily. But why on Earth would Hulu restrict its content to only two countries (the US and Japan) when it could have millions of new subscribers? The answer is - legal matters.

Due to its legal agreements, Hulu is not allowed to broadcast its content to audiences from restricted countries, which leads to Hulu blocking your VPN. Simply put, if it was found out that the company willingly let users from these countries access its streaming platform, it could get into a lot of legal trouble.

When it comes to the process of blocking VPNs, Hulu has made it almost an art form. The company is so focused on blocking VPN IPs that even the best VPNs sometimes struggle to bypass its protections. The moment Hulu figures out the range of the IP belongs to a VPN, it’s blacklisted instantly.

As many VPN users don’t opt for a dedicated IP address and go with a shared one, it becomes easier for Hulu to establish that a group of users sharing an IP are actually all using a VPN and block them.

How To Watch Hulu Using a VPN?

If you live outside of the US or Japan, and there’s a Hulu show you have wanted to watch for a while now, don’t give up on your dream just yet. You can still use a VPN to watch Hulu by following these easy steps.

  1. Pick one of the VPNs from this list.
  2. After installing the VPN, sign in to your account.
  3. Choose a server from Japan or the US to unblock Hulu.
  4. Open the Hulu app on your device or your browser.

What to Look For in Hulu VPNs?

If you haven’t used a VPN before, and now you need it for watching Hulu, these are the things you should look for if you want to get a VPN that will work seamlessly with this streaming service.

  • Simultaneous connections and apps. Hulu offers a wide variety of content to its subscribers, and it is often shared within one household. In order for more people to watch Hulu at the same time, you’ll need a simultaneous connection feature. Look for those VPNs that offer at least five simultaneous connections.
  • Streaming features are an important factor in deciding if you should go with a particular VPN. Ensure your chosen provider offers Smart DNS features, so you can stream using gaming consoles or TVs. Moreover, see if the VPN can provide you with a dedicated IP because this will make it harder for Hulu to block you from accessing the content.
  • Countries and servers. If multiple servers and countries are available, this can provide you with better speed, but you should know that Hulu can still potentially block your IP. If this happens, you can always switch to another server and continue streaming after it changes your IP.
  • Affordability. When it comes to VPNs, premium quality comes at a price. This, however, doesn’t mean that the most expensive one is the best; it just means that you will probably have to pay for a good one, as free VPN options typically have several restrictions in place. While some providers are indeed too expensive, others offer dependable services for an affordable price, and great deals are often available. Remember, free VPNs can rarely unblock Hulu successfully.
  • Speed. Make sure to check the speeds of the VPN you want to buy because you won’t be able to enjoy your streaming experience with constant buffering, slowing down, or even terminating your VPN connection.

NordVPN is one of the biggest names in the industry, and with good reason. With more than 5,000 servers across 59 countries, you’ll hardly find a place where NordVPN doesn’t have a server. After thorough testing, I concluded that NordVPN and Hulu are the best match on our list, which is why this is our top pick.

It’s compatible with almost any device and platform, and alongside its incredible speeds, this provider vowed to provide impeccable security and privacy for its users.

The strict zero-logging policy is no joke for NordVPN as it went through several independent audits in order to showcase its security and privacy levels, and they were all successful. This means that no information about users will be shared with third parties - in fact, no information will be recorded in the first place.

You’ll have a chance to use up to six devices simultaneously, and each connection will be enhanced with server obfuscation, which means that when you start using the VPN, no one will know you’re using it.

Yet, the story doesn’t end there. NordLynx is Nord’s version of the advanced WireGuard protocol that comes bundled with a malware protection system. Regarding speed, independent tests by AV-TEST showed impressive averages of 417 Mbps for the US, 255.9 Mbps for the UK, and 527.1 Mbps for Japan, and my own testing confirmed some blazing VPN speeds.

In addition, I was glad to see specialized servers for ultra-fast streaming, Tor over VPN and anti-DDoS features, IP and DNS leak protection, double VPN functionality, and strong malware protection. There is also a very efficient kill switch for those rare situations where you lose your VPN connection.

When it came to unblocking Hulu, the process was straightforward and quick. I was able to unblock Hulu each time I used a different server, and NordVPN was also great at unblocking Hulu Japan, which some of the other VPNs struggled with.

Since I enjoy streaming services other than Hulu, I also tried NordVPN with Disney+, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime - all of them worked perfectly. Indeed, this provider didn’t want to get left behind with modern trends, so SmartPlay technology helps you stream on your SmartTV, if that’s more your cup of tea.

It was a breath of fresh air to see that NordVPN is not under the Five and Fourteen eyes alliances, so it is not obligated to collect data. The company is based in Panama, so those rules don’t apply, which allows it to provide such great privacy features.

You can choose from several plans, starting with $3.69 a month, which is a bargain for a premium service that will be useful not only for streaming Hulu but for almost any online activity where you want to retain your privacy.

ExpressVPN is a way to go if you value security and privacy, as this provider offers top-notch protection for its users. If you’re unhappy with the service, you’ll have a 30-day money-back guarantee. The first thing I decided to do was test the speeds, and the results were pretty impressive.

The average connection speed for the UK was 499 Mbps, for the US, it was 472 Mbps, and for Hong Kong - 453Mbps. That’s a lot more than you need to open Hulu and enjoy the streaming.

After checking the speed, I went on and played The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, and there was no buffering and no lagging of any kind. However, I had to disable iPv6 for it to unblock the service.

We tested over 20 servers and unblocked 32 streaming platforms, including Disney+, Peacock, and ESPN+. The reason ExpressVPN is so efficient at unblocking these websites is that it constantly works on its servers, and the moment one IP gets blocked, the provider replaces it with another one.

Similarly, I loved that this provider has a default Media Streamer and Smart DNS proxy, which is one of the reasons this VPN can avoid the geo-block. MediaStreamer is quite handy if you want to watch your Hulu shows on a smart TV, console, or another device that normally doesn’t support VPNs. Signing up for it takes a few minutes.

Speaking of the things I disliked, there’s the hefty price that currently starts at $8.32 (at the time of writing this review and if you sign up for a year in advance). Without discounts, you’re looking at a hefty $12.95 per month on a monthly subscription - as much as this VPN does a great job at unblocking Hulu, you can find much more affordable options with similar features.

There’s also the matter of customer support. While it is available 24/7, the agents were quite slow, and the chat connection broke several times.

surfshark homepage

Surfshark is an affordable option that can be used for unblocking Hulu.

Its average speeds for the UK are 253 Mbps, 400 Mbps for Hong Kong, and 317 Mbps for the US. These are pretty solid VPN speeds, mainly because they were consistent during my test period.

Another thing I instantly liked is that Surfshark is not a part of the Five/Fourteen Eyes Alliance. It’s based in the British Virgin Islands, ensuring that this VPN doesn’t have to report anything about its users to third parties.

Going step by step, I decided to look at the features, and it’s safe to say that Surfshark has a very solid offer. The NoBorder feature lets you use it even in countries where VPNs are restricted or prohibited. This is particularly handy if you’re on vacation in such a country or you temporarily live and work there.

Moreover, it uses OpenVPN and Shadowsocks protocols and a kill switch option that lets you shut down your internet connection the moment you disconnect from the VPN. If you commit to a two-year plan, a price of $2.49 is really a great deal.

When I tested torrenting, its P2P feature worked great because everything was smooth, and each torrent was downloaded quickly and hassle-free. I could also unblock Netflix in many countries, including the UK and the US.

Now, it’s time for the main part of this review: let’s see how Hulu and Surfshark work together. When I tried the Buffalo server, it worked like a charm. Still, I wanted to check other servers and the Manassas and Latham servers weren’t as successful. When I tried using Latham, it managed to unblock Hulu, but only after a few attempts.

I couldn’t say the same for Manassas - it simply didn’t work. I returned and did the same two days later, and the problem was fixed, so sometimes you’ll just need to keep trying.

Apart from the servers that didn’t work, the entire experience of watching Hulu with Surfshark was quite enjoyable. I made sure to stick long enough and see if there would be any lag or connection problems, but no such thing happened.

With all this in mind, Surfshark is a pretty solid option if you’re looking for a reliable VPN because it will provide you with proper privacy and security while having adequate speed for watching Hulu and other streaming networks.

cyberghost homepage

This affordable VPN has dedicated Hulu servers, one for Fire TV Stick, one for Android TV, and one for watching Hulu on a desktop device. While there are other servers, using one of these three is best because you might get banned with a regular one. I tried unblocking Hulu with all three of them, and each one passed with flying colors.

However, while I was using Hulu with Cyberghost, there were temporary interruptions, and the experience wasn’t entirely seamless, which knocked this VPN out of my top three choices. This doesn’t mean, however, that it’s not a good option for streaming Hulu outside of the US or Japan - it’s just not the best possible option.

The average speeds I measured with Cyberghost were 853 Mbps for the US, 480 for the UK, and 312 for Hong Kong. Impressive. Cyberghost is constantly trying to improve its services, too, so we can only expect these numbers to improve over time.

When it comes to its features, it offers a Smart DNS tool, like most of the other VPNs, making it possible for you to stream via your TV. It’s also a perfect tool if you want to torrent, and many people who use it have initially opted for Surfshark because of this. Still, if you want to stream Hulu, make sure to always go with a Hulu server, and you’ll have no problems.

Other than that, the price of $2.29 makes it quite attractive for those who want an option that works but doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Finally, I must add I wasn’t too happy with their customer support. I tried contacting them, and the website prompted me to the FAQ section.

Besides, it wasn’t very clear where on the homepage you should click to reach customer support, so I had to find the contact section first - not exactly the most user-friendly experience out there.

atlasvpn homepage

Atlas VPN is one of the less known VPNs whose improved performance drew the attention of one of the biggest names in the industry that decided to acquire it - I’m talking about Nord Security, of course. This tech giant's decision to acquire AtlasVPN a year after it was launched speaks volumes about how seriously this company does its job.

Many people in China, especially the expat community, decided to use this freemium VPN provider because it’s proven very effective when unblocking content that’s otherwise unavailable there.

The first thing that caught my attention was its impressive free version. It’s rare that the VPN provider offers the same speed for the premium and free versions, which is exactly the case with AtlasVPN.

You also won’t lose any significant benefits regarding security, privacy, and overall performance. However, you will get slightly better options if you use the software's premium version. The money-back-guarantee is 30 days.

Perhaps it is important to note that even though the free version is excellent, there have been changes lately in terms of the data cap that you’ll get per month - the 10GB allowance was reduced to just 5GB, and you’ll have to use an email address in order to sign up.

Another thing that I noticed is that when you want to get in touch with the support, they ask for an email address you used for your premium subscription.

I noticed a few more things during my analysis. This VPN’s key features include Tracker Blocker, which disables third parties from gaining access to your personal data, and split tunneling, which further bolsters VPN security, along with the MultiHop+ feature, which uses many rotating locations that enhance the encryption of your connection.

When it comes to testing, I first tried it out with Hulu, which worked well but later failed to access American Netflix with its free version - it only worked with the premium subscription. Torrenting worked perfectly.

My Methodology for Finding the Best Hulu VPN

To find the greatest VPN services for unblocking Hulu, I used a methodology that graded potential candidates on several criteria. You can read more about it below.

Price

I compared the level of quality each VPN offers with the price that’s asked for the service. If the price of the VPN is high, but the feature it provides can be found elsewhere without any caveats, that VPN got a lower grade. I used macOS 12 Monterey version to test these VPNs, and it took approximately six hours

Connection Speed and Servers

These two things were something I examined first since the connection speeds are essential for uninterrupted browsing and streaming experience. All of these VPNs demonstrated fair to excellent speeds, and the connections were mostly reliable, so the task was to rank them from worst to best. Each VPN’s speed was tested twice.

While assessing the VPNs, the number of available servers was also important because the closer the server is to the user’s geographical location, the better the speed. Therefore, if there are more servers to choose from, and a user can choose one close(r) to them, the speed of their connection will be better.

Torrenting

Many people got introduced to VPNs after they wanted to access content that was not available in their countries or wanted to torrent something they didn’t wish to pay for. While torrenting itself is not illegal, accessing and distributing the material that’s copyrighted is.

Since many people are still torrenting today, I examined which VPN from this list allows torrenting.

For this specific criteria, it was essential to establish whether or not the VPN allows P2P sharing and if the no-logging policy is actually true. This is important because it will enable users to conceal their identities. ISPs or government agencies won’t have any information about the network activity, so they wouldn’t know if they used torrents.

Moreover, a provider that doesn’t store any data cannot report anything if authorities come forward and ask to be given information about the user’s online activity.

Privacy

While it’s important for a VPN to bypass geo-blocks, hide your real IP address, and provide reliable and fast connection speeds, there’s not much use of any of it if its main feature is lacking, and that’s privacy. While most VPN providers claim they have a no-logging policy, many of them store your data.

The information that’s often kept includes your personal info, physical location, and browsing data. This can be sold to third parties or even used against you in worse ways.

Because of that, I looked into each of these VPNs’ logging policies in great detail. Apart from this feature, I considered how well-developed the levels of public Wi-Fi protection are, the kill-switch options, the number of shared IP addresses in the roster, and the strength of the server encryption.

Unblocking Hulu and Other Streaming Services

My main criterion for accessing these VPN providers was to see which one does the best job unblocking Hulu and other streaming services. For instance, Netflix is one of the most popular streaming services that offer content based on the user’s location.

I checked each of these VPNs to see whether or not they were successful at accessing Hulu first and then went on with other streaming services. For Netflix, I checked whether the VPN would be able to show me another country’s content and whether I could use a VPN to get around regional blocks.

However, that wasn’t enough. Apart from merely unblocking the content, I tested the consistency of the stream and how reliable the connection was during extended testing sessions.

FAQ
Can I use Hulu with a VPN?

The only possible way for you to watch Hulu outside of the US and Japan is with the help of a VPN. Apart from improved security and privacy, a VPN allows you to hide your actual location, thus making it possible for you to avoid the geo-block and access Hulu. This is necessary because this streaming service is only available in America and Japan.

Does NordVPN unblock Hulu?

NordVPN is great at unblocking Hulu because it works very hard to improve its service anytime Hulu blocks some of the servers. It does that by offering more servers and giving its users an option to use dedicated IP addresses.

Hulu often blocks shared IP addresses after it establishes that many people using one address are actually using a VPN. For that reason, NordVPN, like some other providers, offers you to use a dedicated VPN address that is used only by you, making it harder for Hulu to discover something is off and block it.

How does Hulu determine location?

Although you can set your location on Hulu’s website, the streaming service sets your location automatically the moment you first log in. It uses your IP address to determine your location, and the only way to avoid the geo-block if you are not from the US or Japan is by getting the best Hulu VPN you can find and ensuring it’s on before visiting the site.
