Before analyzing this cybersecurity product and its features, a brief history lesson is in order. VyprVPN was developed by a Swiss company, Golden Frog, which produced the software in response to revelations about the NSA spying on AT&T customers. After the company was set up in 2009, a VPN designed to protect the privacy of online users quickly followed.
VyprVPN prices are some of the lowest among top-tier VPN providers. The monthly cost drops significantly when you sign up for an 18- or 36-month license. Like with many similar products, the lower price won’t necessarily deprive you of any features. VyprVPN isn’t sold in bits and pieces, and whether customers subscribe to shorter or longer plans, they all get the same list of features.
VyprVPN can be purchased in several different ways. You can pay for VyprVPN premium once every two, 18 or 36 months, with prices coming down for longer subscriptions. Since we last reviewed this VPN provider, it has slashed its competitive prices even more.
If you choose to pay for the VPN every two months, the price is $12.95. This plan is perfect if you’re just trying out the service or need VPN protection for a couple of months.
What was once the annual plan (billed $45 once a year) is now an even better offer. For the same price, you get to use the service for free for additional 6 months. This brings down the monthly price to $2.50.
Finally, the best value VPN deal is the 36-month plan which costs $1.81 per month. Users on this plan are charged $65 every three years. This extremely competitive price is, unsurprisingly, the most popular option among VyprVPN customers and costs as much as annual plans at competing VPN providers.
Unfortunately, there is no free trial on offer with this VPN, but the company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee to all its customers, regardless of the plan they choose. In case you’re not satisfied with the product, you can cancel the subscription before the second payment is due, and you’ll get your money refunded. It’s not really the VyprVPN free trial we hoped to see, as you still need to provide your payment information, but it’s the next best thing.
Business owners can also take advantage of VyprVPN’s data protection features. Whether you’re sending routine emails, working as a journalist in a country with strict censorship laws (like China and Russia), or transferring sensitive files, two business plans are on offer for all your VPN needs. These also include a slightly different set of features than what you get with a personal license.
With a starting price of $299 per year, the business version of this VPN is pricier but includes more features. VyprVPN will examine your application and determine the exact price based on the number of licenses the business needs. After the application process, the VPN provider will offer a free seven-day trial along with the price tag.
There are two major differences between VyprVPN for businesses and the personal version. First of all, there is the user management tool, through which you can enable or disable licenses for your employees. You can also give admin privileges to some so they can add their teammates to the company’s VPN plan.
The business version also has a dedicated account manager, making VyprVPN one of the best VPNs for small businesses. As the website states, your dedicated manager will help you with reaching your business goals. VyprVPN also provides 24/7 support for corporate clients, with network engineers ready to solve any issues that may arise.
VyprVPN Business Cloud
Golden Frog’s VPN bundles for businesses include one that has the same set of features as the Business plan with a few notable additions The price starts at $349 per year, but the exact cost depends on the number of licenses you request.
But it’s not just VyprVPN pricing that’s different. With this plan, you’ll also get a dedicated server with its own IP address that you can quickly connect to instead of going through the existing server network. The service is compatible with Amazon Web Service, DigitalOcean, and VirtualBox, with the deployment taking just a few minutes. This is a perfect option for bigger companies.
When it comes to payments and the account setup process, you’ll have to deposit the cash before you can sign up or even download VyprVPN. You can choose between these payment methods:
- Credit or debit card
Unfortunately, Bitcoin isn’t an option, and neither are any other cryptocurrencies, which is somewhat of a downside. After all, a lot of VPN users prefer the anonymity of digital currencies. In case you’re signing up through your smartphone, your payment option will be locked to the payment method registered on your Google Play or iTunes account, depending on which phone you use.
Once you choose a plan and create an account, VyprVPN checks your system and suggests the best option for you to download onto your device. This will either be a desktop or a mobile version of the app, but of course you’re not limited to just those choices.
You can also download it to your smart TV or install the VPN on a router. No matter what option you choose, the installation process is straightforward and fast. After that, it’s just a matter of logging into your account, choosing a server, and enjoying the unlimited data plan.
Desktop and Mobile Apps
Like its high-end competitors, VyprVPN is compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices. Our review has already underscored the simplicity of the setup process and the fact that it requires minimal input from the user. In layman’s terms, you’ll get this VPN going in a jiffy.
The interface is minimalistic; it simply shows whether you’re connected to a server, and if so, which one. Below that, you’ll find a full list of VPN servers and a big button for connecting/disconnecting.
One of the great features is the server browser. It shows pings to each of the available servers, letting you know instantly how fast your connection is going to be. This is especially useful for gamers. When they’re choosing a gaming VPN, a low ping means a better gaming experience.
Even if you’re not into online gaming, it’s great to know how fast VyprVPN servers are and whether there’ll be any lag while you’re connected to a specific server.
On the settings page, there are a lot of options to play with. You’ll find several DNS and data tunneling settings, as well as encryption control. Since VyprVPN runs on the OpenVPN protocol and can be installed on routers and many different operating systems (Linux included), the website hosts dozens of handy tutorials and guides on setting everything up.
When we first examined VyprVPN in mid-2020, it was missing a browser extension. Since then it has introduced this feature and is now matching the offer of competing VPN providers – NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
Online user reviews give the software high scores thanks largely to the sheer number of territories covered by its servers. VyprVPN has servers in 64 countries, covering more than 70 cities across the globe.
Most importantly, the servers are not limited to North America and Europe. There is a significant number of servers on the Asian continent as well. VyprVPN doesn’t rent servers from other companies, guaranteeing the highest level of security for its users.
Speed and Performance
Some VPNs employ speed throttling techniques to offload the surge of new users. That same method is used by a lot of ISPs, so we wanted to check the VyprVPN speed, especially when connecting to distant servers.
For the test, our base network speed was measured at 98Mbit/s down and 58Mbit/s up without a VPN. From our physical location in Central Europe, we connected to several different countries (US and UK included), ran the tests while connected to the VPN, and measured the speed and ping differences.
||Ping difference %
||Down decrease %
||Upload decrease %
VyprVPN didn’t seem to have a great impact on network speeds, so we can definitely say that it has unlimited bandwidth. The differences were miniscule, especially considering that certain speed loss is present when connecting without a VPN, and, due to the encryption, some slowdown was to be expected even with the fastest VPN. All in all, VyprVPN achieved great speed test results.
Compatibility with Streaming Services
When it comes to streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, getting the best bang for your buck is only achieved when you have a VPN. Content providers have a lot of geo-restricted content, meaning that certain shows are only available to audiences in the US or UK. The good news is that VyprVPN can unlock Netflix, as well as any other popular streaming platform. None of them detect the incoming traffic, so we highly recommend this VPN when using streaming services.
We’ve seen that VyprVPN does the trick for unblocking Netflix, but does it also work with torrenting apps? The answer is yes. While Golden Frog doesn’t target P2P fans with its VPN, it’s still a great option if you like getting your files via torrenting services.
Since the company adheres to a strict no-logging policy, you don’t have to worry about any throttling or disconnects if you choose to fire up your torrent client. Our aforementioned speed tests show that you’ll achieve great download and upload speeds when using the VPN.
Since some governments manage to track even VPN traffic, VyprVPN introduced the Chameleon Protocol as a way to combat local censorship. By turning this option on, users can bypass restrictive networks put in place by ISPs, corporations, and governments, giving you access to a truly uncensored internet. The company recently upgraded the protocol and released the 2.0 version, improving stability and masking techniques.
In addition to Chameleon, VyprVPN users have PPTP, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPsec, IKEv2, and WireGuard VPN protocols at their disposal.
The best thing about it is that it’s not just a claim made by the VPN company. It’s audited by an independent security company called Leviathan Security. In fact, this VyprVPN was one of the first to get a third-party audit back in 2018 setting a good example for its competitors. In addition, there is AES-256-CBC encryption, which is impossible to crack.
Another one of VyprVPN security features we tested was the Kill Switch. We turned on the VPN and accessed qBittorrent to download a film. When we interrupted our VPN connection the kill switch automatically stopped our internet connection so our browsing destination remained private.
